Plan how to spend your Sal Klita payments across the first six months of Aliyah for maximum runway.
Sal Klita (literally "absorption basket") is the financial cushion Misrad HaKlita provides to every new Oleh during the first six months of Aliyah. Total payments run roughly ₪25,000–₪50,000 depending on family size and configuration, paid in installments. Used well, it covers your basic living costs while you find an apartment, learn enough Hebrew to function, complete professional licensing if needed, and find work. Used poorly, it disappears in month two on a hotel and a few months of unbudgeted spending.
The optimizer takes your family configuration (single, couple, family with children, retiree) and proposed living situation (Tel Aviv vs Jerusalem vs periphery, hotel for first month vs straight to apartment vs absorption center), then projects month-by-month spending against expected Sal Klita payments. The goal is to identify the months where you will have a gap and plan how to bridge it before it becomes urgent.
Sal Klita is intended for: rent and security deposit, basic furnishing, food, transportation, immediate living costs in months 1–6. It is NOT intended to cover: long-term savings, vehicle purchase, large appliance purchases, long-distance travel, paying off pre-Aliyah debt. Every year a meaningful percentage of Olim run out of Sal Klita early because they treated it as a windfall rather than a runway.
Set aside a "buffer slice" — typically 15–20% of your total expected Sal Klita — for the inevitable surprise expense (security deposit returned late from previous rental, urgent dental work, expedited residency paperwork, kids' camp registration deadlines). Use the Monthly Budget Calculator to model the spending side, and the Benefits Timeline to see what comes next when Sal Klita ends.
Calculate your absorption basket (Sal Klita) payments based on your family situation and Ulpan attendance.

How Sal Klita Works
The Sal Klita (absorption basket) is a financial support package provided by the Israeli government to new olim during their first year. The first payment is made at the airport upon arrival, followed by monthly payments for up to 6 months. Olim attending an Ulpan (Hebrew language course) may be eligible for extended payments at 70% of the standard monthly rate for an additional 6 months (months 7–12).
Note: These figures are estimates based on 2024 rates. Actual amounts are set by the Ministry of Aliyah and Integration and may change. Always verify current rates with your local absorption center (Merkaz Klita).
